Plot Synopsis
The Chinese romcom series In Pursuit of Jade follows Fan Changyu, a butcher's orphaned daughter, and Xie Zheng, a young Marquis seeking the truth about the death of his father, who was a general.
Changyu rescued a heavily wounded Xie Zheng in a snowstorm. Despite her and her young asthmatic sister Changning's dire financial situation, where they relied only on Changyu's butchering services, she nurtured Xie Zheng, who introduced himself as Yan Zheng to avoid complications.
When war broke out and separated the couple, Xie Zheng reclaimed his title as Marquis of Wu'an to protect the country and investigate a decades-old blood feud. Changyu, on the other hand, traded her butcher's knife for a sword and joined the battlefield. Through popularity and political maneuvering, she was declared a Flower General. Eventually, they reunited on the battlefield, fighting side by side against political conspiracies to uncover the truth about the tragedies that shaped their lives.
Direction & Production: There are major character inconsistencies in Fan Changyu and Yan Zheng (or the Marquis of Wu'an). Changyu sometimes appears very smart and vocally unrestrained but is sometimes portrayed as a simpleton. Strategically, this added comic relief and charm to the overall outcome. The Marquis, though very formidable and influential, lapses in protecting those he considers his family: Changyu and Changning.
Theme: Set in the Dayin Dynasty (大胤), a completely fictional period possibly inspired by the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties circa 960–1279 AD.
Conclusion & Verdict: Flawed yet sublimely binge-worthy. While the supporting cast arguably emerged as the biggest winners, gaining widespread exposure and opening the door to even bigger opportunities, director Zeng Qingjie and lead stars Zhang Linghe and Tian Xiwei may find this success a double-edged sword. The series has set such a high benchmark that surpassing it—or escaping the iconic roles that audiences now associate with them—may prove to be their greatest challenge.

Xie Zheng / Marquis of Wu'an (actor Zhang Linghe). Also claimed the name Yan Zheng, Zhou Yige as teen, Ruan Yunji as a young Xie Zheng. He looked as a snobbish, frail nobility scholar but is actually a marquis hiding his identity to investigate his a massacre and seek revenge.
Fan Changyu (actress Tian Xiwei): A bold and strong-willed butcher's daughter who enters a contract marriage with Xie Zheng to safeguard her family's property.
Qi Min / Sui Yuanhuai (Deng Kai): A major antagonist—often described by fans as a "walking red flag"—known for his obsessive, controlling personality and intense chemistry with Yu Qianqian.
Yu Qianqian (Kong Xueer): The owner and manager of Yixiang Restaurant, caught in a complex relationship with Qi Min.
Li Huaian (Ren Hao): The eldest grandson of Grand Tutor Li who serves in the military and develops romantic feelings for Fan Changyu.
